First cycle

General information

  1. In the four semesters of this cycle the student is introduced to philosophy. He takes up the fundamental philosophical themes -- man, God, and the world -- so as to obtain the global vision necessary for a theoretical synthesis and an awareness of the general development of human thought in history. Thus, although in this biennium the speculative aspect is dominant, it is accompanied by a complete treatment of the history of philosophy. This historical introduction is, furthermore, directed to serve as a beginning of a direct reading of the works of philosophy.
  2. A real knowledge of Latin is required in order to have access to the fonts of Thomistic philosophy. Those who do not have this skill must study Latin during the biennium since the bachelors degree is not conferred without a sufficient mastery of this language.
  3. For enrollment in the first cycle a degree sufficient for enrollment in the first cycle of the universities in a student’s native country is required.
  4. The first cycle concludes with a bachelors degree, which is conferred on the students who have completed four full semesters (that is eighteen hours a week of courses in each semester), who have passed all the requisite particular examinations, who have successfully written the required papers, and who have passed the comprehensive examination administered at the end of the cycle.
